Is physiotherapy painful?

Some people are under the misconception that physiotherapy is painful, and for this reason they may shy away from receiving treatment. Others confuse it with other medical interventions which are painful. The truth is that physiotherapy aims at relieving pain rather than causing it. As a matter of fact, physiotherapists are trained to perform range-of-motion and other modalities within the pain-free range.

In the beginning, during the assessment you may feel some pain as the therapist tries to move a joint through your available range. However, once treatment begins, you will find that pain lessens as the joint becomes more flexible. Also, in treating painful conditions such as fractures, sprains and strains, the physiotherapist will use different modalities such as heat or cold packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and massage in order to make your exercise more tolerable and pain-free. In the case of arthritis, therapists may employ hydrotherapy which makes the exercises more comfortable.

In January of 2009 at age 66, I was struck by a car while I was on the side of the road. I sustained a broken shoulder, extensive soft tissue damage in both legs and head/ neck injuries. The Physiotherapists at PPSC have worked with my physician coordinating my therapy recovery process, beginning with Physiotherapy, then bringing in Kinesiology treatments as well as Massage Therapy. The Physiotherapists work with recurring vertigo, light headedness, neck problems and lower back issues, has been like a miracle. Having all of these services in one clinic has made my recovery process much easier. I very much appreciate the effective communication not only with me as a patient but with my physician, and in this uninsured motorist case, my lawyer and an insurance company. I have made continuous progress and feel very fortunate to have found the Panorama Physiotherapy & Sports Clinic. The positive attitude shown by the respective therapists has inspired me to do my part in my healing process and gives me what I feel is a motto for the professional treatment and encouragement received at this clinic.
